My new favorite speaker. Peter Kreeft is a philosophy professor at Boston College and I have been listening to a bunch of his youtube talks lately. I've also read two of his books (Making sense out of Suffering & Because God is Real) and have one of his books on my bookshelf to be read (Heaven, the Heart's Deepest Longing). I particularly found interesting this youtube talk on happiness:
In it he talks about how Jesus in his sermon on the mount gives us a picture of happiness that is exactly contrary to our modern conception. Please take a minute and listen to the talk it's really quite extraordinary. The line that got me and made me want to write this post was his comparison of different religions on the subject of suffering. In buddhism the main goal of Buddha was to remove suffering. In Christianity, the main goal that Jesus has is to remove sin, which he did by embracing suffering. Jesus used suffering in the conquering of sin. Very interesting way to think of it. Both religions deal heavily with the subject of suffering (as all religions must I suppose), one seeks to eliminate it, while the other uses it to achieve a higher goal.
If you enjoy the talk, Dr. Kreeft has plenty more great youtube talks and also great free audio and writings on his website.
